The urinary system in dogs, or the excretory system
It consists of two kidneys, two ureters, a urinary bladder, and a urethra. In dogs, as in humans, it is responsible for removing waste products and excess water from the body.
The most common urinary system disorders in dogs
The urinary system is a sensitive system, susceptible to various ailments.
The most common include:
- urinary stones
- cystitis
- kidney failure in dogs
- urethritis
- benign prostatic hyperplasia
Urinary stones and cystitis in dogs have relatively similar symptoms, which include foamy, cloudy urine or hematuria, urinary urgency, frequent urination, oliguria, pain during urination, characteristic, hunched posture during urination. In turn, renal failure is manifested by increased thirst, loss of appetite, weight loss. If the owner notices such symptoms in their dog, they should immediately go to the vet for further diagnostics. Diagnostics include urine tests, ultrasound imaging and radiography. It is worth bearing in mind that complications of diseases related to the urinary system may affect other organs, e.g. the prostate gland in a male.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) affects approximately 80% of dogs after the age of five. In older dogs, over 10 years old, this condition can occur in up to 100% of males. As a result of BPH, the volume of the prostate can increase from 2 to 6.5 times. This disease is an excessive growth of the glandular epithelium and, to a lesser extent, connective tissue.
How to strengthen the urinary system in dogs?
To prevent urinary tract diseases in dogs, they should be provided with an adequate amount of fresh water and a diet rich in nutrients. Regular veterinary check-ups, including dog urine tests, are crucial for early detection of problems. It is also worth reaching for supplements that support the urinary system or prostate in dogs. One such product is Game Dog Prostate Protect 60 tabs available in our offer. It can be used both prophylactically and in adult, uncastrated males who already have benign prostatic hyperplasia.
